-Sun Tzu, The Art of War
So why am I quoting Sun Tzu, referencing animes, and using a picture of Jesus and a Super Soldier with PTSD, enjoying Dee’s in a blog post about evangelism?
Another Anime, Trigun, is more accurate in it’s portrayal of Christian values. In all of Anime, I’ve not found a better, more Biblically accurate prayer and repentance than Chapel's Death Scene in Trigun. It’s lacking in a few regards from a theological standpoint, and yes, it’s subs.
The only constant is change, and the rate of change itself isn’t constant either. Church attendance is down in most western countries. The brick and mortar edifice is an effective evangelism tool in some instances; however, it’s not the only tool in the arsenal of the evangelist.
In fact, I would posit, it’s the worst.
A church is primarily for discipleship, evangelism happens outside it’s walls, because you can’t disciple someone who isn’t interested in Jesus.
The man of God came up and told the king of Israel, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Because the Arameans think the Lord is a god of the hills and not a god of the valleys, I will deliver this vast army into your hands, and you will know that I am the Lord.’ ” 1 Kings 20:28
We need to get creative, like Jesus attending Comicon, enjoying a highly non-kosher BigMac with a dude named John. Creativity is nothing new.
When I was with the Jews, I lived like a Jew to bring the Jews to Christ. When I was with those who follow the Jewish law, I too lived under that law. Even though I am not subject to the law, I did this so I could bring to Christ those who are under the law. 1 Cor. 9:20
You might not get an Otaku to come to church, but is God the God of hills? Isn’t He also in the valley? Clearly Jesus is at Comicon, I sawz it on the interwebz.
Regardless, if we are to reach the unsaved, we won’t reach them by condemning without understanding. But how do we connect with those we can’t stand?
I mean seriously, I’m dreading the day I go to a convention to sell my sci-fi novel, and Comicon gets picketed by Westboro Baptist or (insert destructive idiot here).
The perception is that the church hates the Otaku. And let’s be honest, come to church sporting a Warhammer 40k shirt, it won’t matter that you’re at church.
